Message of Department Head
Since the founding of Hong Kong Baptist College in 1956, social work has become a unique education programme to train critical and committed social workers with a focus on intellectual and professionalvigour, addressing personal suffering and structural issues and confronting social inequality and to advocate welfare of people in society. Throughout the last 60 years, we have been fully engaged in collaborative efforts with social service organizations in Hong Kong in many frontiers, including research studies, professional training and consultations, for well-being of people.

Social Work at HKBU is informed by a concern to promote the welfare of people in particular the welfare of service users and the underprivileged. Graduates of our social work programmes can develop a good command of the theories and methods of interventions required by the profession. In the final year of study of Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) programme, students can concentrate on social work with different clienteles, including youth, elderly people or people with mental health problems, along with disability, gender and disadvantaged groups.

The Department offers three taught postgraduate programmes, namely Master of Social Work, Master of Social Sciences in Counselling, and Master of Social Sciences in Social Work in addition to the 4-year Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) programme. Our faculty members include well-established social work scholars and practitioners from the field with vigorous research and academic endeavors. Alongside a major interest in social policy and welfare ideologies, we have developed concerns and research interests in youth studies, ageing, mental health, social stigma, gender studies, young people, mental health, housing, children and family, and narrative therapy. The Department also offers a self-financed 2-year Bachelor of Social Sciences in Social Policy programme and to house a self-financed 2-year Bachelor of Social Sciences in Psychology programme. In addition to the taught postgraduate programmes, the Department also invites application for our research-based MPhil or PhD study.

The Department is embarking on a new year in good spirits with newer faculty members and to adhere to providing a learning environment that is intellectually exciting, professional enriching and social rewarding for our students. We continue our efforts to advance social work education and academic endeavors through the implementation of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, research projects and academic and professional exchanges of faculty members and students in Hong Kong and overseas.
